Professionalism and the Evolution of Nursing as a Discipline: A Feminist Perspective
Abstract
Professionalism is a patriarchal invention and by its very nature is alienating to women. The development of nursing as a discipline has been dominated by the hegemony of the patriarchal institutions of professionalism. In the health care field, patriarchal standards have reigned, and the personal experience of professional caregiving has been devalued. We have seen and heard in many instances where patients have felt their time with physicians is very short. However, in my opinion, because so many women today are becoming medical professionals, including physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners especially, women are showing the value of caregiving and its importance by taking time and showing the art of caring with their patients, while still showing professionalism. As time progresses, I believe that the professionalism in nursing will be dominated by women.
