Placement Criteria

After enrolling in any Literature course: To ensure that students are placed in the appropriate language course, our department requires all students enrolling in to complete the English Placement Quiz in Canvas. This quiz should be completed during the first week of classes or prior to the start of the semester.

*For further information, please consult the English and Literature Department’s official placement guidelines and/or the instructor or department chair.

Retroactive Credit

What is Retroactive Credit in ENGLIGH AND LITERATURE?

Retroactive credit allows students to earn college credit at Butler for prior English Language. When students place into and successfully complete a higher-level course with a grade of C or better, they can receive credit for the lower-level courses they skipped. This is an excellent way for students to accelerate their progress. However, it is important to note that retroactive credit may not always transfer as language credit at other institutions. In most cases, students can resolve this by taking a credit-by-exam at their new college. Students should discuss this with their instructor or advisor early in the process.

Retroactive Credit Form

Students should complete the Retroactive Credit form, specifying the course for which they wish to receive credit, and obtain their advisor's signature.
