Running Head: Signature Project
Kerita Howard-Field Project Part 1
Purpose: For my signature project, I will be detailing the purpose of social workers. I currently work for the State of Alabama in the Special Projects Unit, and social workers have always stood out to me. They make a difference in our state and look out for families and communities with needs. I plan is to observe them in the field doing what they do best. Watching them in the field will guide me to what they do and get a better understanding of the job and what it entails.
Time Frame: The State of Alabama building downtown is an hour from where I live but 20 minutes from where I work daily. In my line of work, I come in contact with many social workers every day. I will plan accordingly with a manager in the department to plan my visit and research the areas for my study. I will work quietly but get permission on any task that I write about. My onsite visit, interviews, and assisting in the field with a social worker will only be for a day due to the nature of the business.
Methods of Data Collection: Interviews, observation and program evaluations will be the methods of data collection that I use in my study. I plan to collect data through my on-site field observation. I will also talk one-on-one with the social worker I am assigned to, to get more information about the job, the day-to-day and how the program benefits the state. I will get program evaluations from the manager who has approved for my study.
Anticipate Results: The study will provide evidence to support social workers’ job, what they do in the field and how they help families in the State of Alabama. The results will help to get to know the resources that are offered so we can get them out to families that are needed.

Running head: NATURALISTIC OBSERVATION
In doing my naturalistic observation about the purpose of social workers, I used different methods of communication to get the information that I needed for my study. The Program Manager, Shontay Traylor, and I have exchanged emails, had phone conversations, met one on one to discuss the roles of social workers and I got a chance to meet several social workers in the unit. With meeting with the workers, I have gained an better understanding of their job and able to view their working environment. There are several units in the department. The units include: Child Care Service, Adult Service and Early Prevention. The child care unit had the most casers so I was inquired on that unit more than the others. With being a social worker in the child care unit there are no set hours. Social workers get calls throughout the day whether early morning or late at night. This observation is planned to get a handle on the positions of a social worker and the meaning of their calling. The obligations of social work give it its name. Society has provided the calling with the obligation of exploring the manners by which people are affected by their environmental factors, their networks, and social foundations. As per Howe (1994), these are huge obligations, and the calling should watch out for them. Social work requires a lot of liability and a guarantee to client wellbeing due to its significance and nature.
In my observations from going on site with a social worker and reading briefs, I have understood that a social worker performs fundamental obligations. Teenagers and families needing lodging, food, and clinical consideration are upheld by friendly social workers. They help teenagers in having a more productive future. There are numerous sorts of social work. There are rudimentary, optional, and close to home prosperity, youngster and family, and simple social workers. Being a social worker enjoys various benefits. One model is that social workers save kids. They eliminate the youngster or kids from a severe climate, mental maltreatment, or genuine maltreatment. Social workers additionally search for ways of aiding the family assuming that the guardians are sick and incapable to really focus on the youngster or kids, or on the other hand in the event that they are sensitive to medications or liquor and can't actually zero in on the kid or kids. The social workers will choose if the house is protected enough for the kid to grow up and turn into a youthful grown-up. Likewise, if you need to turn into a social laborer, there are times when a kid should be put in a kid care office in light of the fact that the guardians can't actually focus on the kid. At the point when a kid is set in kid care, they will have a protected spot to live and develop into youthful grown-ups. Moreover, it imparts trust in them. Expectation of a superior life and a superior future. Moreover, it provides them with a feeling of safety, guaranteeing them that their folks will not necessarily in all cases hurt them in the future. Having the option to step in and assist with the issue is one of the difficulties of being a social worker. Assuming the youngster is excused or abused at home, social laborers should help them. Or on the other hand, on the other hand, whether or not the house is risky for residence. They require security help and an opportunity at a superior future. In the event that the opportunity arrives, something ought to most likely be finished. One of the numerous strong fields in our general public is social work. They help people and families in beating the difficulties that most minorities face in day to day existence. They show individuals of all racial and sexual directions how to keep up with their solidarity and help them in accomplishing their own, similarly aggressive objectives in regular daily existence. Changing into a social worker I feel will be an astonishing and testing livelihood. Being a social worker qualifies being skilled for perceive the people who are stuck between a rock and a hard place and helping them by answering a particular crisis, like the maltreatment of a kid or accomplice, and by helping clients in changing in accordance with explicit life altering events. Social workers, for example, advance change, decisive reasoning in relational connections, and individual success.

In doing my participant observer interaction about social workers, I had to interview the manager from previous interviews to get the answers that were needed for the chain of command in the department of social worker. Along with the interview, the Program Manager, Shontay Traylor, and I have exchanged emails which showed her title in the organization’s title information but in our interview, she described her role and their chain of management. The organization’s members receive and send information through their email portal as the main source of communication. Intranets, messages, internal social media, online video platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams, archive sharing and venture the board apparatuses are method for internal communication in organizations. They are very formal with communication and greetings. Communication is one of their strong points at the organization and what helps to keep things running smoothly. As we know, communication is defined as a two-way method for imparting data as contemplations, sentiments, and thoughts between at least two people fully intent on building a comprehension.
The role of the organization consists of: Viola Betton, the Director, Shontay Traylor, the Program Operation Manger, Beverly Shields, and Yolanda Bright are the Social Service Supervisors and there are 6 employees in the social worker field. Power means a lot to the hierarchical entertainer. Having power implies more grounded employer stability and better monetary prizes, as well as having the option to impact others all the more effectively and play out one's work all the more actually (Magee and Galinsky 2008). When someone lacks power, it can imply lacking independence and control in one's ability to be a leader, being vulnerable to unjustifiable action, and encountering low morale and fulfillment of the work and confidence (Keltner et al. 2003). Empowered the significant significance to individual working, it is basic to comprehend how a few people obtain power when others don't, why a few people hold their power whenever they have accomplished it, and why others tumble from their grandiose situations despite the political benefits power gives. In this organization, knowledge and longevity is link to the organization’s role within the company. Ms. Viola Betton is the oldest and has been with the State of Alabama for 20 years. As indicated by Joseph Campbell, who composed Legend with 1,000 Countenances, a legend story regularly included a primary person that had accomplished something past the typical scope of accomplishment and experience. The legend has a "ethical objective that doesn't include individual increase." As opposed to be an observer, a legend effectively partakes in getting things going. Legends frequently need to conquer unrealistic chances or fight with "foes" inside and outside the association to make the best decision and help others. The "foe" could likewise be as wasteful work processes, or an issue that is difficult to settle. She is the true hero and running the show. She keeps things in flow and her leadership seems to be impeccable from accolades shown and remarks from her peers.

In doing my critical and historical frame workers about social workers, I had to think about the leadership, power, and stories that was giving to me about the social workers. Department of Human Resources social worker department fit as having transformational leadership style. This is a style where the leader recognizes the required change, makes the vision for that change, moves and guides others to pursue that change, and executes the change collectively. In the event that you picked social work as a profession, you as of now have the longing, the desire, the vision, and the drive to do extraordinary things. Numerous specialists accept that administration viability is the single greatest differentiator in an effective vocation. As a social laborer, you graduated with an initiative range of abilities — better than most different experts have when they start their professions — however there is something else to learn and encounter. Perceiving the distinction among administration and management is fundamental. They are not really same. You can be a director without being a pioneer, and you can be a pioneer without being in an administration job. Turning into a social work pioneer and director is both an astonishing and overwhelming possibility. The urgent part of progression, normal to the jobs of both social specialist and social work pioneer and chief, is a common obligation to a civil rights esteem base. This responsibility shapes normal proficient ways of behaving that are deferential, engaging, and cooperative. While, for experts, these ways of behaving are fundamental to the connections they lay out with youngsters and families, for social work leaders and chiefs, they are center to their associations with the social work experts for whom they are capable. These progressions can veil the critical shift that is engaged with taking up a social work initiative and the executive’s job. The test, then, at that point, for recently delegated social work leaders and administrators is to perceive and clutch these coherencies while laying out their new expert personalities. Drawing on the important administration and the executives’ models can aid this temporary interaction, as can getting to the suitable wellsprings of support.
