Name of Video #1: The Arts in Action

1. What is the main point of the video? Did the video do a good job of making the point? Why or why not?

The video's main point is to explain the benefit of including dance, drama, and kinesthetic movement in learning activities. I think the video does a good job of doing that because it shows a different way for children to learn. It was mentioned that kinesthetic movement is often not thought of in learning, and it shows that this different approach can be very effective.

2. Describe the setting of the video. Include details such as where the video was made, the kind of early childhood program, and the main action in the video.

The video was made in a public elementary school inSan Diego, CA. It was filmed in grade K- 2 classrooms, where teachers led the children in movement activities that were integrated into their lessons.

3. In detail, describe something from the video that surprised you or made you think of something a little differently. If nothing surprises, in detail, explain why.

Until I saw the video, I hadn't appreciated that drama, music, movement, and dance could help students learn all kinds of things while having fun doing it. I had thought of those things as being "fillers" between lessons or to keep children busy. I observed at a child care program where the teachers had three and four-year-olds doing worksheets during "Work Time. Anything they didn't finish was put in their homework folder to be completed at home and returned the next day. When "Work Time" ended, the children had "Play Time." After thinking about what I saw in the video, I think children should be up and actively moving around and learning through their play. Instead of all children doing the same worksheets, they should have guided experiences geared to their developmental levels.

4. Give an example of how you might apply something you learned from the video in your classroom. And explain why you chose that example.

When I am working with English Language Learners, I will follow the recommendation from the video to include dance, drama, and movement activities into lessons. I chose that example because I can see how using dance, or movement, or drama could make it easier for non- native speakers because it would be fun, less stressful, and a way to learn.
